Become an adviser
Become an adviser
Volunteers are at the heart of Harpenden Money Advice Centre. Our debt advisers work alongside people who are struggling financially, helping them understand their situation, explore their options, and take practical steps towards a more stable future.
We are always interested in hearing from people who may be considering volunteering as a debt adviser, even if they are not ready to commit straight away.
What the role involves
As a volunteer debt adviser, you would typically:
Meet with clients to understand their financial situation and what they want to achieve
Help clients explore debt options and understand the advantages and disadvantages of each
Work with clients to create a realistic household budget
Communicate with creditors and other organisations on a client’s behalf
Provide ongoing support and review progress over time
Client meetings usually take place during weekday daytime hours. The role is a mix of office-based and remote work, with full support from the team.
What we’re looking for
This role may suit you if you:
Have a good understanding of personal finances and budgeting
Are comfortable working with numbers and detailed information
Can communicate clearly and sensitively, both in person and in writing
Are organised, methodical, and able to keep accurate records
Share our values of being non-judgemental, impartial, and client-focused
Are able to maintain confidentiality at all times
Are an active member of a local Christian church and committed to our Christian ethos
Previous experience in finance, advice, or support roles is helpful, but not essential. Full training is provided, along with ongoing supervision and support.
Why volunteer with us?
Volunteering with HMAC offers the opportunity to:
Make a real difference to people in your local community
Develop skills and experience in debt advice and budgeting
Be part of a supportive, values-led team
Contribute your time in a way that is meaningful and practical
