Opening Our 1,000th Case: Creating Fresh Starts for People Facing Debt

Richard Payne, Founder of Harpenden Money Advice Centre

We have recently opened our 1,000th case — a significant milestone that reflects 17 years of providing free, independent debt and money advice in our community.

Each case represents a person or household facing financial pressure, often with complex and worrying circumstances. While every situation is different, the need for clear, practical support is a consistent thread.

Our approach is always to take the time to understand each client’s situation and focus on what is right for them.

Welcoming this new milestone, Richard Payne, who founded HMAC said:

“Over the years, we’ve seen how the right advice at the right time can make a real difference. It’s not just about dealing with debt — it’s about helping people regain confidence and move forward. For many, it’s the opportunity for a fresh start, and that can be genuinely life-changing.”

Growing demand and trust

Demand for our services continues to grow, and each year we are seeing more people reaching out for support.

Increasingly, people are finding us through word of mouth, with a growing number of clients referred by those we have previously helped — a reflection of the trust placed in the service.

The scale of the challenge

The scale of the financial challenges people are facing continues to grow. Last year alone, clients came to us with £1.9 million of debt.

During the year, around £500,000 of this was written off through insolvency solutions. Overall, we have helped to address £11.3 million of debt across the clients we have supported to date.

“Reaching 1,000 cases reflects both the demand for this kind of support and the trust people place in the service. Our focus is always on helping people understand their situation and take practical, manageable steps forward.” said David Key, Chair of Trustees.

We know that many people continue to face financial challenges, and we remain committed to providing clear, compassionate advice to anyone who needs it.

If you are struggling with debt or money worries, support is available.
